Understanding its proper operation\, maintenance\, capabilities\, and limitations is paramount to consistently producing high quality concrete products. \nSpeaker Bio\nScott owned and operated his family’s Besser-equipped pipe plant in North Carolina for over twenty years\, successfully growing the business before selling to Hanson (now Forterra) in 2007. At that time\, he joined the Besser Team in a technical service capacity; first as a contractor and then as Technical Service Manager in 2017. He’s an instructor for the American Concrete Pipe Association’s Pipe School\, and for the Besser training programs held in Sioux City and in producers’ plants. \nIn his role as VP\, Scott leads the Pipe and Precast Team with his can-do attitude\, resourcefulness\, and intimate industry knowledge.

DESCRIPTION:Location:  Frisco 1 \nSpeakers:  Larry Mauck\, P.E. – Pretech \nCourse Description:\nThis presentation will define key components that are required to properly takeoff a project (tools needed\, key symbols\, profile vs plan view\, etc.)\, identify plan and specification sheets required to conduct a proper takeoff\, identify important elements required for proper pipe takeoff\, and how to perform an actual plan takeoff.  It will conclude with a demonstration of a plan takeoff. \nSpeaker Bio\nLarry Mauck is the Sales Manager\Engineer for Pretech Corporation\, a family owned precast pipe and structure company located in the Kansas City metro.  Larry has been in the precast pipe industry for approximately 15 years. He graduated from the University of Kansas with a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering and Master’s Degree in Engineering Management and is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Kansas. \nLarry has been married to his wife\, Conda\, for 34 years and has two daughters\, one son in-law\, one grandson\, and two dogs.  He considers himself a “sports” junkie and says his accomplishment was when he became “Poppy” to Mason his two year old grandson. \n

DESCRIPTION:Location:  Frisco 1 \nSpeakers:  Trevis Hanson\, C.E.T. – Canada Concrete Pipe & Precast Association \nPresentation Description\nConcrete pipes are the backbone of our precast industry. Concrete Pipe and Pipe Design presentation starts with a walk thru the early years of the use of concrete by the Romans and shows the evolution towards the multiple applications that use concrete pipes nowadays. Then I bring people back to the basics and explain what is precast concrete and the 2 concrete types used to manufacture concrete pipes\, concrete properties\, and standards. \nNow that the basic knowledge is established\, I move to the basis of concrete pipes: terminology\, design basic concepts\, comparison of the behaviour of rigid pipe vs a flexible pipe underground\, the difference in the installation standards for both pipes\, and then I highlight the 2 design methodologies for the concrete pipe which takes me to explain the 3EB-test and the reinforcement placement and manufacturing. \nThen\, the presentation moves to the design part: I explain the 5 basic steps to design a concrete pipe using the indirect design method and I do a live demo of a design in pipepac. \nLastly\, a brief mention cracks and crack assessment. \nSpeaker Bio\nTrevis Hanson is a Certified Engineering Technologist registered in the Province of Alberta in Canada. \nHe graduated from the Lethbridge Community College in Southern Alberta in the late 1990’s with 2 technology diplomas. In 1998 he began working with a Consulting Engineer as a Bridge Technologist. His duties included the hydraulic design of bridges and culverts\, structural inspections of bridges and culverts\, and construction inspection of roads and bridges. \nIn 2005\, he was hired by a Contractor in Alberta as a Project Manager and Estimator for their bridge construction group. In 2009\, he moved across Canada\, to Ontario\, to work as a Project Manager for a sewer and watermain Contractor. As a Contractor\, Trevis was responsible for the delivery of projects from tender to the end of the warranty period. \nIn the summer of 2012\, he moved back to Alberta to work in precast concrete sound wall and retaining wall sales. In summer 2014\, he was hired by the City of Calgary as the Bridge Operations Technologist. The City of Calgary has over 500 bridges\, tunnels\, and structural stairways. These structures required inspection ever 12 to 24 months and was the primary duty in this role. \nTrevis became the Technical Resources Manager of Alberta and British Columbia with the Canadian Concrete Pipe and Precast Association in May 2021. \n(Optional – Trevis has been playing the bagpipes for 37 years and is currently a Leadership Corporal in the Calgary Police Service Pipe Band.)

Prior to his work at AGC\, Michael retired from TxDOT as the Director of Engineering and Safety Operations where he oversaw and coordinated TxDOT’s engineering operations for the Bridge\, Construction\, Design\, Maintenance\, Materials and Tests\, and Traffic Safety Divisions. \nMichael’s 24-year career at TxDOT began in 1997 as an engineering assistant in the Atlanta District. He rose through the ranks in the northeast portion of the state including the Lufkin and Paris districts before being appointed the Director of the Maintenance Division in 2014. In that role\, Michael oversaw TxDOT’s statewide emergency response to Hurricane Harvey in 2017. \nMichael is a 1988 graduate of Texas A&M University with a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering. \nJim Pappas\nReceived Bachelor of Civil Engineering from the University of Delaware and Masters in Business Administration with a concentration in Environmental Sustainability from Wilmington University.\nWorked for Delaware Department of Transportation for over 29 years.\nMajority of the time was in pavement and materials engineering then as Assistant Director of Performance Management\, Deputy Director of Operations and Support\, and current role as Division Director of newly formed Division of Transportation Resiliency & Sustainability

He’s been with Northern for seventeen years\, and involved in the quality program for fourteen. Rich is responsible for developing and overseeing Northern’s award winning quality control program\, maintaining various plant and company certifications\, ensuring product compliance to local\, state and national specifications\, personnel training\, and overseeing research projects. Rich holds a degree in Science and is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Rich is a current member of ACPA’s Quality\, Education\, and Research Committees.

(ACPA) \nPresentation Description\nThe ACPA Infrastructure Committee’s (IC) primary focus is improving the position of concrete pipe with specifying agencies around the country. \nThis course will walk attendees through the inner workings of the IC and help to answer the all-important question: “What can the IC do for me\, and how do I get involved?” The goals of this course will be: \n\nReview the history of the IC\nEvaluate the goal and mission of the IC\nExplore the different functions of the IC\nDiscover major accomplishments of the IC over recent years\nUnderstand how to get involved in the IC\nOpen Panel Discussion with IC leadership team\n\nSpeaker Bios\nRiley is currently the vice-chair of the ACPA Infrastructure Committee. He works as the technical resource engineer for Forterra in Minnesota. He was originally hired with Cretex and has remained with the same company (now Forterra/Rinker) since he began full-time employment in 2014. He is a graduate of Minnesota State University Mankato and a licensed professional engineer in the state of Minnesota. Riley and his wife\, Jamee\, reside in Prior Lake Minnesota with their two kids of 1 and 2 yrs. old! \nRick is a past chairman of the board for ACPA\, current chairman of the Infrastructure Committee of ACPA and serves as Vice President Technical Services for Rinker Materials. Rick has been with Rinker since 1989 serving in Cement\, Aggregates and Ready Mix Divisions in Florida prior to joining the Rinker Pipe Division in Houston in 1996. Prior to Rinker\, Rick worked for Master Builders Technologies and Jackson Ready Mix in Dallas\, TX. Away from Rinker\, Rick enjoys his wonderful wife of 42 years\, 4 children and 5 grandchildren. \nKim is Vice President of the ACPA for Strategy and Operations representing one of the largest National/International Associations that support the Nation’s Transportation and Infrastructure needs. As Vice President\, she is an accomplished leader at the American Concrete Pipe Association as the spokesperson for the concrete pipe industry in all matters affecting the industry’s welfare.  ACPA represents over 400 Manufacturing Plants in the USA and Canada\, and represents over 125 Members both Nationally and Internationally.  She excels in strategic planning with expert skills in cultivating operational and team excellence.  Spahn drives success in 7 Strategic ACPA Committees (Quality\, Safety\, Education\, Marketing\, Government Relations/Lobbyist\, Infrastructure\, and Research) that are the Foundation of the Associations success\, mission\, and vision.  Spahn works alongside of the Board of Directors to develop teams and execute national and local strategies for growing market share of concrete pipe. \nSpahn also serves as the President of the ACPA Research and Education Foundation. The Foundation develops and funds research that supports the goals of the ACPA. Spahn is responsible for managing the Foundation’s budget including fundraising and management of research contracts.  The Foundation also provides educational grants to individuals to attend seminars and schools that foster knowledge of all types of pipe under her management.

DESCRIPTION:Location:  Frisco 2 \nSpeaker:  Tryg Hoff\, P.E. \nPresentation Description\nEthics is more than just an ideal for Engineers\, it is the foundation of our profession. This course will explore the past cases\, hypothetical concepts\, and the current canons of Ethics from two different engineering societies. The course is broken down into four easily consumed sections: 1. History 2. Canons 3. Current Events 4. Application. Attendees should expect to achieve the following learning objectives at the end of the course: \n\nUnderstand the differences between micro and macro ethics concepts\nLearn the history of professional ethics in the engineering field\, and exploring when the Health\, Safety\, and Wellbeing of the public became paramount\nHow to incorporate ethics into daily life\, so that the big issues aren’t so daunting.\n\nSpeaker Bio\nTrygve W. Hoff\, PE\, is the Northeast Region Engineer for the American Concrete Pipe Association (ACPA). Tryg graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering from The Ohio State University and his professional experience ranges from environmental consulting in Columbus\, Ohio\, to architectural engineering in beautiful Lake Tahoe\, California. Tryg lives in Madison\, Virginia\, near the Blue Ridge mountains with his wife\, Brooks\, on a small 40‐acre horse farm. Tryg has been promoting resilient infrastructure with the ACPA since 2012.
