SUMMARY:Resilience: The Key to Sustainable Infrastructure
DESCRIPTION:Location: Frisco 1-5 \nSpeaker:  Trygve Hoff\, P.E.\, ENV SP – American Concrete Pipe Association \nPresentation Description: \nResilience stands as the bedrock of sustainable infrastructure\, ensuring longevity and adaptability amid mounting challenges. In the face of climate change\, natural disasters\, and manmade disasters\, resilient systems can withstand shocks\, recover swiftly\, and continue functioning efficiently. Integrating resilient designs\, materials\, and strategies safeguards investments\, and while minimizing environmental impact. After all\, specifying a resilient product that will remain in use for 100+ years is significantly more sustainable than using one that must be remade and replaced multiple times. \nSpeaker Bio: \nTryg Hoff is the Northeast Region Engineer for the American Concrete Pipe Association (ACPA). Tryg graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering from The Ohio State University and his professional experience ranges from environmental consulting in Columbus\, Ohio\, to architectural engineering in beautiful Lake Tahoe\, California. He currently lives in Madison\, Virginia\, near the Blue Ridge mountains with his wife\, Brooks\, on a small 40‐acre horse farm. Tryg is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio\, and an Envision Sustainability Professional. He has been promoting resilient infrastructure with the ACPA since 2012.

SUMMARY:Box Culvert Design
DESCRIPTION:Location: Frisco 2 \nSpeaker: Brian Jenner\, P.E. – Rinker Materials \nPresentation Description: \nPrecast Concrete Box Culverts are an important part of the United States Infrastructure.  Their main purpose is to convey water under roadways.  They are also used as pedestrian tunnels\, utility tunnels\, wildlife passages\, and many other uses. They are buried in the ground and act as a bridge for the traffic above them.  Precast Concrete Box Culverts are designed to withstand the loads applied to them making them both resilient and sustainable parts of the nation’s infrastructure.  This presentation will go over how Precast Concrete Box Culverts are designed.  We will discuss loads\, load factors\, and design criteria used as we design a box culvert using AASHTO LRFD Specifications and Eriksson Culvert. \nSpeaker Bio: \nBrian is a Project Engineer for Rinker Materials and lives in Rapid City\, South Dakota at the base of the Black Hills National Forest close to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial. \nOther than a short time as Technical Resource Engineer for Montana\, Wyoming\, and the Dakotas\, Brian has been a Project Engineer since 2005.  His responsibilities are primarily for items produced in Montana.  Brian is responsible for the structural design of prestressed bridge beams and box culverts as well as project management items like product costing\, shop plan production and order entry.  Brian is a Registered Professional Engineer in 20 states. \nBrian graduated from South Dakota Mines with a B.S. (1994) and M.S. (1996) in Civil Engineering and was part of the 1995 National Championship Concrete Canoe Team. \nBrian is a member of several ASTM Committees\, ACPA Infrastructure Committee and PCI Bridge Producers Committee. \nIn his spare time\, Brian enjoys spending time with his family\, fishing\, kayaking\, hiking and retro gaming.

SUMMARY:Changes to the AASHTO Design Service Life
DESCRIPTION:Location: Frisco 2 \nSpeaker:  Josh Beakley\, P.E. – American Concrete Pipe Association\n \nPresentation Description: \nThis past summer\, the AASHTO Committee on Bridges and Structures approved the incorporation of 100 year material design properties for some thermoplastic pipes. AASHTO does not require a 100 year service life\, so this is somewhat unique. What service life should be given to the different pipe materials? Is it really as simple as just picking a pipe type and saying it has a 100 year service life\, or is there more to it? What is a “typical drainage application”? Let’s discuss. \nSpeaker Bio: \nJosh Beakley is Vice President of Engineering for the American Concrete Pipe Association. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Virginia. Josh received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Rutgers University\, New Brunswick\, NJ and received his Masters in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington. \nJosh has been with the American Concrete Pipe Association since 1994. Prior to joining ACPA\, he worked as a Civil Engineer for the Bechtel Power Corporation. \nIn his job functions for the American Concrete Pipe Association Josh represents the industry on national standards making committees. He also coordinates research and design programs for the precast concrete culvert industry. Occasionally\, he assists engineers with the design and specification of precast concrete pipe and box culverts as well as performing educational seminars. \nJosh is a member of ASCE\, ACI\, ASTM\, and participates in AASHTO functions. He is a Spangler Award Winner\, and an Award of Merit Honoree of ASTM\, as well as a Heger Award Honoree of ACPA. He was also an ASCE Outstanding Reviewer in 2020 for the ASCE Journal of Pipeline Systems Engineering and Practice.
