Would class III pipe be sufficient\, or do you need a higher strength pipe? Is soil design required when you specify flexible pipe? What are the main differences in design of rigid and flexible pipes? This class will provide you answers to questions that design engineers typically have. You will learn the basics of a proper pipe installation\, differences between flexible and rigid pipes on plans and in the ground. We will discuss notes and details that should be added on plans to protect yourself from having issues in the field during construction. \nThis presentation will cover the differences between rigid and flexible pipe materials. We will discuss how these materials are design\, tested\, installed and inspected to prove performance. The students will be able to know the differences in how these products are design in details as well as the installation process. The class will also learn what is needed on plans and how to provide clear details to contractors so they can provide a successful installation. \nSpeaker Bio \nAlex is a Technical Sales Engineer at Oldcastle Infrastructure. He has been in the industry since 2019. He graduated from the University of Alabama with a BS in Civil Engineering and minor in Environmental Engineering. Alex lives in Dallas and his area of responsibility includes North Texas where he promotes the benefits of precast concrete drainage products. Alex loves his family\, the outdoors\, and sports.

SUMMARY:The Future of Cement for Water Resource Application
DESCRIPTION:Location:  Grand Ballroom B \nSpeaker:  Josh Gilman\, P.E. – Portland Cement Association (PCA) \nPresentation Description\nConcrete pipe and other products contribute to the economic viability and resilience of water resources projects. Products are often selected for the long service life they provide\, which can be readily demonstrated with a life cycle analysis (LCA). The initial carbon footprint of any material or construction method is an important aspect of an LCA\, but it is not the only one and may not even have the greatest contribution: maintenance considerations and overall service life may ultimately outweigh the initial footprint. Long lasting\, sustainable structures require durable and resilient materials\, and for most applications concrete is the material of choice. \nOrdinary portland cement (OPC) manufactured to meet the ASTM C150 standard has been the default binder material in concrete specifications for water resources projects for decades. The properties and performance of both fresh and hardened OPC concrete are well documented\, as is the superior durability and longevity of concrete structures that are properly designed and constructed. The environmental impact of manufacturing OPC is also well documented\, and regulators impose strict requirements on all cement producers to monitor and report emissions. According to the U.S. Environmental Protections Agency (EPA)\, the CO2 footprint of cement production in the U.S. accounts for 1.25% of the total U.S. CO2 emissions. Although the industry has made considerable progress since the 1970’s to reduce its energy demand by 40%\, the Portland Cement Association (PCA) and its members recognized that more must be done to tackle the carbon footprint of the cement and concrete industry\, and developed a Roadmap to Carbon Neutrality to lay out specific tasks and targets to achieve its goals. \nPortland-Limestone Cement (PLC)\, was developed with the capability to replace Type I/II OPC in concrete mixtures at a 1:1 ratio. PLC is engineered to maintain the same performance as OPC but as a “greener” cement\, offers up to a 10% lower carbon footprint than OPC. PLC is manufactured to meet the ASTM C595 blended cement specification\, and extensive comparison testing has demonstrated its equivalent properties and performance\, including alkali-silica reaction (ASR) resistance\, corrosion prevention\, freeze-thaw resistance and sulfate resistance when compared to OPC. PLC performs like OPC when combined with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) and admixtures in concrete mixtures at equivalent proportions. Replacing OPC with PLC in concrete for water resource projects delivers the same long-term durability and resilience with the added benefit of significantly reducing the carbon footprint. \nLearning Objectives:\n• Describe the importance of evaluating the whole lifespan of a project to understand the carbon footprint and compare alternatives.\n• Explain the environmental impact of producing portland cement and the efforts of the industry to reduce its carbon footprint.\n• Recognize PLC and how it can be substituted for OPC to improve the environmental impacts of concrete while maintaining the same properties and performance. \nSpeaker Bio \nJoshua Gilman\, P.E.\, is the manager of water resources and geotechnical markets for PCA. He is responsible for market development and expanding the use of concrete and other cement-based materials for water resources and geotechnical applications including roller-compacted concrete\, soil-cement and waste stabilization. \nGilman has more than 10 years of experience in the geotechnical and water resources markets. Prior to joining PCA\, Gilman held geotechnical engineering positions with consulting firms in the Northeastern and Southeastern United States\, and most-recently managed a satellite office for a large firm performing geotechnical and construction materials testing services. Water resources\, especially dam engineering and dam safety\, have been a focus throughout Gilman’s career including employment with a multi-discipline consulting firm that served the hydropower industry. \nGilman holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Norwich University\, and is a licensed professional engineer in the state of North Carolina.

He has more than 15 years of executive service at DOTD. Under his leadership thus far\, DOTD has ushered in project finance and project innovations\, including Public Private Partnerships and Construction Manager at Risk projects. During his tenure as Secretary\, DOTD has awarded more than $4.6 billion in construction projects. \nDr. Wilson is Vice-Chair of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Executive Committee and is the President of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). \nDr. Wilson earned a B.A. in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Louisiana and holds a Master of Public Administration degree\, as well as a Ph.D. in Public Policy from the Nelson Mandela School of Public Policy at Southern University. \nShawn and his wife\, Rocki\, reside in Lafayette\, they have two children\, one son-in-law\, and two beautiful grandchildren.

Topics to be addressed include:\n– Horizontal soil forces on manhole wall\n– Basic buoyant forces and effect of water table\n– Soil weight\n– Skin friction\n– Bearing stress considerations\n– Swelling soils\n– Hydrostatic forces\n– Live load considerations\n– Flexural design of base slab \nSpeaker Bio \nRiley is the Technical Resource Engineer for Rinker Materials in Minnesota. Formerly with Forterra\, and Cretex before that\, Riley has been employed for more than 8 years by 3 different precast companies without ever changing jobs. He earned his BS in Civil Engineering from Minnesota State University\, Mankato. Riley is an active member of ASTM and serves as the chair of ACPA’s infrastructure Committee.

Precast Concrete has become the product of choice in many new installations due mainly to its inherited strength and its ability to withstand all the loads in all the different directions that the pipe will experience during construction as well as throughout its service life. Trenchless installations help developers and contractors accommodate future growth in cities and highly populated urban areas at an affordable price with minimum surface disruptions. \nThis presentation will give you basic knowledge regarding trenchless installation\, its benefits\, and the different precast concrete options. Then\, the presentation will go more into depth about the type of precast concrete options available for trenchless installation\, design considerations\, and best practices. Lastly\, we will review some case studies of successful trenchless installations in Canada. \nSpeaker Bio \nMafe Pinzon is the Technical Marketing Manager at The Langley Concrete Group. Mafe has a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and is a professional engineer registered in the provinces of Alberta and British Columbia. She has 17 years of work experience\, 8 in the underground infrastructure industry as technical resources engineer. Mafe strongly advocates for women in the engineering and construction industries and continuously promotes the importance of underground infrastructure. Mafe is a member of the ASTM C13 Committee and is part of the board of directors of the NASTT BC Chapter and PWABC.

These products have proven to be durable\, and lend themselves well to accelerated bridge construction and the FHWA’s emphasis on “Every Day Counts” (EDC). However\, unlike precast concrete pipe\, box culverts do not come in strength classes\, and often must be specifically designed for sizes or loads that extend beyond those considered in the ASTM Standards. This presentation discusses the various loads that need to be addressed when designing a precast box culvert. \nSpeaker Bio \nJosh Beakley is Vice President of Engineering for the American Concrete Pipe Association. He is a registered professional engineer in the state of Virginia. Josh received his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Rutgers University\, New Brunswick\, NJ and received his Masters in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington. \nJosh has been with the American Concrete Pipe Association since 1994. Prior to joining ACPA\, he worked as a Civil Engineer for the Bechtel Power Corporation. \nIn his job functions for the American Concrete Pipe Association Josh represents the industry on national standards making committees. He also coordinates research and design programs for the precast concrete culvert industry. Occasionally\, he assists engineers with the design and specification of precast concrete pipe and box culverts as well as performing educational seminars. \nJosh is a member of ASCE\, ACI\, ASTM\, and participates in AASHTO functions. He is a Spangler Award Winner\, and an Award of Merit Honoree of ASTM\, as well as a Heger Award Honoree of ACPA. He was also an ASCE Outstanding Reviewer in 2020 for the ASCE Journal of Pipeline Systems Engineering and Practice.

SUMMARY:Box Culvert Manufacturing & Installation
DESCRIPTION:Location:  Grand Ballroom B \nSpeaker:  Trevis Hanson\, C.E.T. – Canadian Concrete Pipe and Precast Association \nPresentation Description \nDiscover how precast concrete box culverts are made using drycast and wetcast concrete. Learn about the different precast concrete box structures and how they are installed properly for long life and proper performance. See examples of unique installations including clam-shell boxes\, three sided boxes\, and accelerated bridge construction. \nThis presentation details how drycast and wetcast concrete is produced and how both concrete types are used for precast concrete box culverts. Attendees will learn about the structural design of precast concrete box culverts as well as the different exposure classes of concrete. Precast concrete box culvert joints are described and examples of the different types are shown. Installation in different circumstances is shown\, complete with connection plates and even post tensioning. Different precast concrete box sections for unique circumstances are detailed and described. 2 videos showing unique installations are shown at the end of the presentation. This first video is a 3-sided concrete box installation on precast concrete footings. The second video is a time lapse of accelerated bridge construction where the contractor had 20 hours and 5 minutes between scheduled trains with no option for delay. \nSpeaker Bio \nTrevis Hanson is a Certified Engineering Technologist C.E.T.) registered in the Province of Alberta in Canada. \nHe graduated from the Lethbridge Community College in Southern Alberta in the late 1990’s with 2 technology diplomas. In 1998 he began working with a Consulting Engineer as a Bridge Technologist. His duties included the hydraulic design of bridges and culverts\, structural inspections of bridges and culverts\, and construction inspection of roads and bridges. \nIn 2005\, he was hired by a Contractor in Alberta as a Project Manager and Estimator for their bridge construction group. In 2009\, he moved across Canada\, to Ontario\, to work as a Project Manager for a sewer and watermain Contractor. As a Contractor\, Trevis was responsible for the delivery of projects from tender to the end of the warranty period. \nIn the summer of 2012\, he moved back to Alberta to work in precast concrete sound wall and retaining wall sales. In summer 2014\, he was hired by the City of Calgary as the Bridge Operations Technologist. The City of Calgary has over 500 bridges\, tunnels\, and structural stairways. These structures required inspection ever 12 to 24 months and was the primary duty in this role. \nTrevis became the Technical Resources Manager of Alberta and British Columbia with the Canadian Concrete Pipe and Precast Association in May 2021. \nTrevis has been playing the bagpipes for 38 years and is currently a Leadership Corporal in the Calgary Police Service Pipe Band.
