It is important to understand how the information found in various references and guides on soils relates to what might be seen on a project site\, along with the importance of this information in pipe installations. This presentation will cover: 1. Soil basics\, terminology\, and the importance of proper evaluation and construction; 2. Table 2 – USCS\, AASHTO\, and USDA comparison; 3. Compaction equipment\, lift thicknesses\, practices\, and testing; 4. Quick checks in the field & lessons learned; 5. AASHTO #57 Aggregate; 6. Jobsite and excavation safety. \nSpeaker Bio: \nKarl Beckemeier started with Rinker Materials in 2023 and is the Technical Resource Engineer for Missouri\, Kansas\, and Nebraska. His previous experience includes 2 years designing public infrastructure projects at Anderson Engineering\, 4 years with Terracon performing field inspections and testing on soils and construction materials\, 3 years as a Materials Inspector with the Missouri Department of Transportation\, and 2 years as the Quality Control Engineer at Charah\, Inc. for fly ash\, bottom ash\, and FGD gypsum in Louisville\, KY. Karl graduated from the Missouri University of Science and Technology with a M.S. and B.S. in Civil Engineering\, along with a B.S. in Architectural Engineering. He is a licensed Professional Engineer in Missouri. \n

He then spent 7 years with the City of Calgary as the Bridge Operations Technologist inspecting and maintaining bridge structures. In May of 2021\, Trevis joined the Canadian Concrete Pipe and Precast Association as the Technical Resources Manager – Western Canada. \n

SUMMARY:Highway Live Loads on Concrete Pipe
DESCRIPTION:Location: Kojo Kamau B – 4th Floor \nSpeaker:  Eghe Igiehon – American Concrete Pipe Association\n \nPresentation Description: \nACPA’s Design Data #1 for Highway Live Loads has recently been updated to address the latest changes in the AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. As such\, it would be a good time to give a presentation on live load design of RCP and follow the methodology as outlined in Design Data #1. In most presentations on RCP design\, there is insufficient time to include the details of live load along with the general basics of pipe design and soil pipe interaction. Presenting on the individual topic of live load will allow for more time to discuss fundamental live load concepts such as: wheel contact area\, distribution of the wheel load through soil\, impact factors\, and how the load is transmitted through the pipe in intermediate as well as shallow earth cover. This design shows the critical importance of assessing both live and dead loads to ensure the pipes can withstand the impact of traffic. This presentation focuses on the structural evaluation and design considerations for concrete pipes\, it will increase the understanding of how the live loads affect the RCP\, and provide a more accurate evaluation of the required supporting strength of the buried RCP. \nSpeaker Bio: \nEghe is currently based in Irving\, Texas\, and has been with ACPA since December 2021. She has a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from University of Texas at Arlington and is working on a Masters in Structural Engineering. As a Technical Engineer\, she focuses on key projects such as the QCast program\, ISO accreditation\, and technical design improvements. Eghe reviews and makes final decisions on QCast plants\, manages data for the QCast dashboard\, and contributes to technical updates. Her daily responsibilities include reviewing/updating technical items\, managing QCast-related procedures\, and being actively involved in industry meetings. She also stays engaged with the industry through plant tours and industry meetings\, further enhancing her technical expertise.\n

SUMMARY:D-Load Design of Elliptical & Arch Pipe
DESCRIPTION:Location: Kojo Kamau B – 4th Floor \nSpeaker:  Josh Beakley\, P.E. – American Concrete Pipe Association\n \nPresentation Description: \nOftentimes in Pipe School we do our best to give a basic understanding of D-load design for concrete pipe. This is the bread and butter of designing RCP. Unfortunately\, with the limited time available\, the presentations typically stick to standard circular pipe. Though it follows the same basic concept of relating field conditions to the 3.E.B test condition\, D-load design of Elliptical and Arch Pipe is quite different than that of circular pipe. This presentation would be D-load design specifically for Elliptical and Arch Pipe. \nThis presentation will discuss such items as;\n• The assumed bedding angle at the bottom of the pipe\,\n• The portion of the pipe subjected to lateral soil pressure\,\n• How the combined vertical reaction and lateral support are incorporated into a bedding factor\,\n• How the bedding factor is used to relate the field condition to the three-edge bearing condition. \nSpeaker Bio: \nCurrently based in Irving\, Texas\, he has been working for the ACPA since February 1994. As the Vice President of Engineering\, he works with the national specifying agencies to develop the proper standards for buried infrastructure. Additionally\, he helps engineers with design and installation questions dealing with precast concrete pipe and box culverts\, as well as assists in the development of software to make their jobs easier. As for his day-to-day activities\, he works on the editorial tasks in the morning time such as meeting minutes\, meeting reports\, developing draft ballot items\, reviewing papers\, and responding to emails. In the afternoon\, he works on more technical tasks like addressing technical questions\, reviewing technical changes to standards\, and updates to the software. \n

DESCRIPTION:Location: Kojo Kamau B – 4th Floor \nSpeaker:  Brian Jenner – Rinker Materials\n \nPresentation Description: \nPrecast Concrete Box Culverts are an important part of the United States Infrastructure. Their main purpose is to convey water under roadways. They are also used as pedestrian tunnels\, utility tunnels\, wildlife passages\, and many other uses. They are buried in the ground and are an important part of the nation’s infrastructure. This presentation will go over how Precast Concrete Box Culverts are designed. We will discuss loads\, load factors\, and design criteria used as we design a box culvert using AASHTO LRFD Specifications and Eriksson Culvert. \nSpeaker Bio: \nBrian is a Project Engineer for Rinker Materials and lives in Rapid City\, SD at the base of the Black Hills National Forest close to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial. Other than a short time as Technical Resource Engineer for Montana\, Wyoming\, North Dakota and South Dakota\, Brian has been a Project Engineer with Rinker Materials/Forterra/Cretex since 2005. HIs responsibilities are primarily for engineered products produced in Montana. Brian is responsible for the structural design of prestressed concrete beams and box culverts as well as project management and shop plan production. Brian is a Registered Professional Engineer in 20 states. Brian graduated from South Dakota Mines (BSCE 1994) (MSCE 1996) and was part of the 1995 National Championship Concrete Canoe Team. Brian is a member of ACPA and PCI Bridge Producers Committee. In his spare time\, Brian enjoys spending time with his family\, fishing\, kayaking\, hiking and retro gaming. \n

SUMMARY:Box Culvert - Drainage Improvements along I-94 in Valley City
DESCRIPTION:Location: Kojo Kamau B\, C – 4th Floor \nSpeakers:  Michael E. Johnson\, P.E. – NDDOT\nBrandon Barnes – Barr Engineering Co. \nPresentation Description:\n \nImprovements to the drainage system along I94 were required because the existing storm sewer\, constructed in the mid-1960s\, was undersized and had reached the end of its design life. Site constraints\, including a building immediately adjacent to the storm pipe prevented replacement along the existing alignment. Faced with limited right of way\, high groundwater\, and poor soils\, NDDOT began the process of evaluating options for improving drainage. We’ll share lessons learned during design and construction as NDDOT navigated corridor filled with surprises including an historic dump site\, unmarked geothermal system\, and contaminated soil and groundwater. From old (very old) whiskey bottles to tanker trucks (lots of trucks)\, we’ll share the many obstacles overcome during construction of the new system to improve drainage in Valley City. \nSpeaker Bios: \nMichael serves as an Assistant Design Engineer in NDDOT’s Design Division.  His team serves as the lead roadway design group for NDDOT\, delivering projects of varied scope\, scale and complexity across the State Highway system.  In his time at NDDOT\, he has also been a lead designer himself\, a Project Manager for several projects and the MPO Coordinator.  Michael has been with NDDOT for 20 years. \nBrandon is a Vice President and Senior Water Resources Engineer with Barr Engineering Company and has more than 18 years of experience providing a wide range of water-resource management services. A highly regarded hydrologic and hydraulic modeler\, his project work includes design of storm sewer systems\, coincidental-frequency analyses\, and one- and two-dimensional hydrologic and hydraulic modeling for stormwater\, storm sewer\, flood-protection\, floodplain\, drainage\, and watershed-improvement projects. He enjoys evaluating existing systems and identifying strategies to optimize system performance. For drainage improvements near Valley City\, Brandon was the Project Manager of an interdisciplinary team that worked with NDDOT to modify the existing drainage system to improve conveyance and reduce flood-risk for existing infrastructure in the area.

DESCRIPTION:Location: Kojo Kamau B\, C – 4th Floor \nSpeaker:  Mike Pniewski\, P.E.\, P.S. – Lucas County \nPresentation Description:\n \nWill provide a case study of several concrete pipe storm sewers throughout Lucas County\, that have been in place for over 50 years\, and are still performing sufficiently. Case study will include pictures and video of existing concrete pipe storm sewers that have been evaluated for current and future performance under highways. \nSpeaker Bio: \nMike began with the Lucas County Engineer’s Office on August 21\, 2017\, as Chief Deputy Lucas County Engineer\, before becoming the Lucas County Engineer in 2020. \nMike graduated Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (BSCE) from the University of Michigan. He also has a Bachelor of Science in Land Surveying degree\, a Master of Science in Civil Engineering\, a Master of Business Administration Degree (MBA) and is a graduate of the United States Air Force Air Command and Staff College. \nHe has worked as an engineer for over 10 years in the private sector\, been an adjunct professor in civil engineering and land surveying for over five years at various universities including the University of Toledo and most recently worked seven years for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers\, Buffalo District at their Toledo Project Office. \nHe is a licensed Professional Engineer in six states including Ohio\, and a licensed Professional Surveyor in Ohio and California. Mike is a certified Project Management Professional (PMP)\, a LEED accredited professional and a Certified Federal Surveyor.
