SUMMARY:Bridge Replacement with Box Culverts
DESCRIPTION:Location: Frisco 3\, 4\, 5 \nSpeaker:  Wes Musgrove\, P.E. – Iowa DOT \nPresentation Description: \nWes will discuss Iowa’s innovative and cost-effective use of both precast pipe and box culverts as a replacement for aging structures.  This presentation will include both immediate and long-term cost-savings and efficiencies of Iowa’s unique and streamlined construction approach. \nSpeaker Bio: \nWes holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from Washington State University.  He has 26-years of experience with the Iowa DOT\, 16-years of which have involved construction contract administration and materials-related responsibilities in the field in various capacities.  Wes started with the department as an Engineer-in-Training at the Davenport Construction Residency in East Central Iowa where he worked for 4 years before obtaining PE licensure.  He then served for 2 years as the Assistant Resident Construction Engineer (RCE) in Des Moines\, then as the Des Moines RCE for 4 years\, during which the 14-mile I-235 corridor reconstruction project through the Des Moines metro area was substantially completed.  Wes’ more recent experience includes 6 years as the District 1 Construction Engineer overseeing construction contract administration and materials inspection in 12 counties in central Iowa\, followed by 4 years as the Director of the Contracts and Specifications Bureau.  During his tenure there\, Iowa achieved first-in-the-nation status in completing a 100% electronic contracting process from plan turn-in to signed construction contract\, including the implementation of digital contract and performance bond signatures for over 1\,000 State and Local transportation infrastructure projects then valued at $1.2 Billion in awarded contracts annually.  Wes currently serves as the Director of the Iowa DOT’s Construction and Materials Bureau\, where his responsibilities as the State Construction and Materials Engineer for the past 6 years include central administrative oversight of Iowa’s $850M annual Transportation Improvement Program and $4.2B 5-year Program.  Current initiatives being championed include e-ticketing for asphalt\, concrete\, aggregates\, and other materials\, which is a key remaining element to achieve 100% electronic contract administration and materials documentation workflow.

SUMMARY:Jacking Pipe Under Highways & Railroads
DESCRIPTION:Location: Frisco 1 \nSpeaker:  Aiden Rajswing\, P.E. – Thompson Pipe Group \nPresentation Description: \nTrenchless methods are popular in the industry especially when reducing impact on the community and transportation systems is required. A common trenchless method for installation of Reinforced Concrete Pipe is Pipe Jacking. Pipe Jacking involves tunneling through the soil without disturbance to the community above the tunnel. Jacking allows certain projects that are not feasible through open cut methods to come to fruition\, a few of these will be discussed in this presentation. The TxDOT permits Reinforced Concrete Pipe for Jacking\, Boring\, and Tunneling which is the preferred method for pipe construction under a Highway or Railroad. Thompson Pipe Group will explore how concrete joints are selected\, their jacking capacity and trenchless methods available in the industry. \nSpeaker Bio: \nAiden has a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Colorado-Boulder and minors in Economics and French. He has construction experience as a Field Engineer for Kiewit Infrastructure West. Aiden has been a Texas Registered Professional Engineer since October 2020. He has 6 years of experience with Thompson Pipe Group Business Development and Engineering. Mark has worked for DelDOT since 2006 where he started as a Resident Engineer on highway construction projects. He moved to the position of Area Engineer where he managed a number of large projects ranging from $2 million to $120 million. In 2018 he moved to the position of Safety Program Manager for the State of Delaware.  Prior to joining DelDOT Mark worked for a number of consultants where he managed highway construction projects. Mark also brought e-ticking to Delaware\, the first state to provide state-wide hot-mix tickets electronically to all contracts. \nMark graduated from the University of Delaware where he attended college at night with a degree in Engineering Technology. He obtained his P.E. license in 2016. Currently he is also an adjunct instructor at Delaware Technical and Community College. He has been married for over 25 years and is a proud father and grandfather. To quote Mark\, “construction is my passion and integrating new technologies into the industry is my goal.”

DESCRIPTION:Location: Frisco 2 \nSpeaker: Brian Jenner\, P.E. – Rinker Materials \nPresentation Description: \nPrecast Concrete Box Culverts are an important part of the United States Infrastructure.  Their main purpose is to convey water under roadways.  They are also used as pedestrian tunnels\, utility tunnels\, wildlife passages\, and many other uses. They are buried in the ground and act as a bridge for the traffic above them.  Precast Concrete Box Culverts are designed to withstand the loads applied to them making them both resilient and sustainable parts of the nation’s infrastructure.  This presentation will go over how Precast Concrete Box Culverts are designed.  We will discuss loads\, load factors\, and design criteria used as we design a box culvert using AASHTO LRFD Specifications and Eriksson Culvert. \nSpeaker Bio: \nBrian is a Project Engineer for Rinker Materials and lives in Rapid City\, South Dakota at the base of the Black Hills National Forest close to Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial. \nOther than a short time as Technical Resource Engineer for Montana\, Wyoming\, and the Dakotas\, Brian has been a Project Engineer since 2005.  His responsibilities are primarily for items produced in Montana.  Brian is responsible for the structural design of prestressed bridge beams and box culverts as well as project management items like product costing\, shop plan production and order entry.  Brian is a Registered Professional Engineer in 20 states. \nBrian graduated from South Dakota Mines with a B.S. (1994) and M.S. (1996) in Civil Engineering and was part of the 1995 National Championship Concrete Canoe Team. \nBrian is a member of several ASTM Committees\, ACPA Infrastructure Committee and PCI Bridge Producers Committee. \nIn his spare time\, Brian enjoys spending time with his family\, fishing\, kayaking\, hiking and retro gaming.

County Materials is a full service producer of concrete pipe\, precast box culverts and other associated concrete products. \nHe’s actively involved in the concrete industry for over 40 years in marketing and production precast pipe\, box culverts and 3-sided bridge systems. \nSteve has held leadership positions in the Illinois Concrete Pipe Association\, Board member of National Precast Concrete Association\, founding member of the Derby City Chapter-ASHE and currently Indiana State Director of IKO Concrete Pipe Association. \nMarried to Martha\, a real estate broker\, they have 2 grown sons\, Patrick and Andrew\, who have blessed them with a granddaughter\, Journey\, and grandson\, Oliver. \n  \nJohn Susong has been with Rinker Materials for 24 years\, holding roles as a technical resource engineer\, account manager\, sales manager and general manager. While AOP for road-stream crossing design has become common practice for coastal states to address the seasonal migration of anadromous fish species\, it has been slower to be implemented in midwestern states. This presentation discusses the challenges in creating and implementing AOP policies and standards at Wisconsin DOT. Inclusive in the discussion will be how AOP designs have increased the use of large diameter precast pipe and some of the unique challenges related to construction. \nSpeaker Bio: \nEd serves as one of Wisconsin DOT’s statewide drainage engineers in its Central Office Bureau of Project Development where he has worked the last 7 seven years. His responsibilities include development of WisDOT’s policies\, specifications\, and guidelines that relate to all things drainage apart from bridges. DESCRIPTION:Location: Frisco 3\, 4\, 5 \nSpeakers:  Adrianna Lash – Rinker Materials\nAmjad Alzubi\, PE – AZ DOT\n \nPresentation Description: \nWe will give a brief overview of the new Arizona DOT precast reinforced box culvert standard drawings and specification published May 2023\, how the conversation was initiated\, and why the standard drawings and specification were needed in Arizona. We’ll discuss how a DOT creates standard drawings and specifications\, the importance of industry participation\, and what’d next now that the precast RCB specification is published. \nSpeaker Bios: \nOriginally from Jordan\, Amjad attended the University of Arizona\, and graduated in December 1998. Hired by Arizona DOT in April\, 1999. Started as a bridge designer\, then promoted to a bridge engineer\, then to a senior bridge engineer. In 2017\, Amjad was promoted to a newly created position as the first Bridge Standards Engineer. Currently\, the team leader for one of the 3 Bridge Group design sections. As the Bridge Standards Engineer\, Amjad oversaw and regulated all modifications to ADOT’s Standard/Stored Specifications related to Bridges and Structures. Amended all Bridge Group’s Standard Drawings to include railings\, approaches\, deck joints\, culverts\, retaining walls\, sound barrier walls\, and traffic structures inclusive of tubular sign structures and Dynamic Message Sign tubular frames. Updated all ADOT’s Traffic Lighting and Signal Standards per AASHTO’s required specifications. Assisted Bridge Group engineers/designers in drafting and modifying specifications for projects. Amjad works side by side with ADOT’s Roadway and Traffic Groups Standards Engineers and assist with structural related issues affecting their area of expertise. \nAdrianna graduated from Arizona State University in 2018. Shortly after\, she started her career in storm water treatment with AbTech Industries\, helping industrial\, commercial\, and municipal customers meet storm water NPDES permit requirements (pollutant discharge requirements). In 2020\, she joined Oldcastle Infrastructure and entered the world of precast concrete drainage structures. She joined Forterra Pipe & Precast\, now Rinker Materials\, as a Technical Resource Specialist in late 2021. She currently offers support to consulting engineers and agencies\, like ADOT\, in both the Arizona and New Mexico market.

Over the past 6 years\, the Minnesota DOT (MnDOT) and the Minnesota Concrete Pipe (MNCPA) have engaged in a joint technical committee focused on updating and improving concrete pipe and box culvert standards for the advancement of Minnesota infrastructure and the precast industry. The committee includes representation from MnDOT materials\, bridge\, and hydraulic departments as well as 4 different local precast producers. The committee has progressively been working through updates to different sets of standards including pipe\, arch pipe\, manholes\, and box culverts\, as well as the development of new product standards. Throughout this process\, open communication and partnership have helped to find amicable solutions and advance standards in a direction that makes sense to MnDOT and the precast producers. This presentation will focus on lessons learned from this engagement and the realized benefits of regular collaboration between DOT and producers. \nSpeaker Bios: \nJoe Black is a licensed professional engineer working for the Minnesota DOT (MnDOT) Bridge Office\, Standards and Research division. Joe is in charge of the design of standards including precast concrete box culverts\, concrete pipe\, and other features such as CIP cantilever retaining walls. He has 13 years experience with MnDOT with 6 years of experience working with MnCPA. Joe lives with his wife and 5 children in North St. Paul\, MN. \nRiley Dvorak is a licensed professional engineer serving as the technical resource engineer for Rinker Materials in Minnesota. In the face of climate change\, natural disasters\, and manmade disasters\, resilient systems can withstand shocks\, recover swiftly\, and continue functioning efficiently. Integrating resilient designs\, materials\, and strategies safeguards investments\, and while minimizing environmental impact. After all\, specifying a resilient product that will remain in use for 100+ years is significantly more sustainable than using one that must be remade and replaced multiple times. \nSpeaker Bio: \nTryg Hoff is the Northeast Region Engineer for the American Concrete Pipe Association (ACPA). Tryg graduated with a BS in Civil Engineering from The Ohio State University and his professional experience ranges from environmental consulting in Columbus\, Ohio\, to architectural engineering in beautiful Lake Tahoe\, California. He currently lives in Madison\, Virginia\, near the Blue Ridge mountains with his wife\, Brooks\, on a small 40‐acre horse farm. Tryg is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Ohio\, and an Envision Sustainability Professional. He has been promoting resilient infrastructure with the ACPA since 2012.
