Bury Depth Considerations for Manholes
March 7, 2023 @ 10:15 am - 11:15 am CST
Speaker: Riley Dvorak, P.E. – Rinker Materials
Presentation Description
We are fairly comfortable with installing RCP over 30′ deep with proper design considerations – but what about the manholes the pipes connect to? This course will discuss important considerations to take into account when designing deep (round) precast structures, including: soil forces on manhole walls, buoyant forces, and structural considerations for base slabs.
This course will look at important design considerations for deep-bury round precast structures. Topics to be addressed include:
– Horizontal soil forces on manhole wall
– Basic buoyant forces and effect of water table
– Soil weight
– Skin friction
– Bearing stress considerations
– Swelling soils
– Hydrostatic forces
– Live load considerations
– Flexural design of base slab
Speaker Bio
Riley is the Technical Resource Engineer for Rinker Materials in Minnesota. Formerly with Forterra, and Cretex before that, Riley has been employed for more than 8 years by 3 different precast companies without ever changing jobs. He earned his BS in Civil Engineering from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Riley is an active member of ASTM and serves as the chair of ACPA’s infrastructure Committee.
