Ethics and Safe Design
February 9, 2023 @ 9:00 am - 9:55 am CST
Location: Grand Ballroom C
Speakers: T. Mike Toole, P.E., PhD, F.ASCE – UT
Presentation Description:
Prevention through Design (PtD) is an emerging safety management technique in which the safety of construction and maintenance workers is explicitly considered during the design of a project. Also called Design for Safety and Safety by Design, PtD has applications in many industries, is a direct application of engineering codes of ethics relating to social sustainability principles, and can contribute to achieving resilient infrastructure. This presentation will summarize the PtD concept, discuss the articles in the ASCE Code of Ethics that favor PtD, provide examples from multiple construction sectors, and discuss processes and tools needed to enable PtD.
Learning objectives include:
1)gain understanding of the principles and processes underlying Prevention through Design
2) gain understanding of engineering codes of ethics by applying the ASCE Code of Ethics to an emerging safety management technique
3)to gain an understanding of how common business interests may conflict with implications of engineering code of ethics.
