Resilient Culvert Design

March 9, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm CST

Presenter:  Jesse Beaver – SG&H

Presentation Description:
Resilience and Sustainability are hot topics in today’s infrastructure conversation. Yet engineers are forced to rely on claims by individual industries about the resilience of their products, rather than relying on a national standard to guide resilient design. Mr. Beaver will provide a broad discussion and background information on the engineering design framework for enhanced resilience of roadways at culvert crossings that are exposed to floods or wildfires.

Speaker Bio
Mr. Jesse L. Beaver is Head of the Engineering Mechanics and Infrastructure Division (EMI) of SGH in Waltham, Massachusetts. His experience includes soil-structure interaction for buried pipes and tanks, structural/civil engineering, highway bridge construction, construction management, and strategic planning. Jesse’s education includes ACEC Senior Executive Institute, a Bachelor of Science from the University of Washington, and a Master of Science from MIT. Prior to joining SGH, Jesse was Assistant State Construction Engineer (ASCE) and Bridge Designer with the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT). Within the area of buried concrete structures, Jesse has conducted numerous soil-structure interaction studies, investigated structural failures, conducted national research for transportation infrastructure, and assisted manufacturers and contractors with analysis, testing, and design. Jesse has written material, product, design, and installation standards, and evaluated mechanical properties of structural materials in laboratory and instrumented field testing. Jesse is past Chair and current Member of the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Committee AKB70 Culverts, Buried Bridges, and Soil-Structure Interaction, Member of ASTM Committees A05/C13/D20/F17/E60, Voting Member of American Water Works Association (AWWA) Standards Committee on Polyolefin Pressure Pipe, Voting Member of the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code (CHBDC) Buried Structures Technical Subcommittee, Voting Member of American Concrete Institute (ACI) Committee 345 on Concrete Bridge Construction, Instructor for the America Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Seminar for Design of Buried Pipes, and a Fellow of ASCE. Jesse is a registered professional engineer in more than twenty states and five Canadian provinces and is a veteran of the United States Army.
